WHEN TO TALK AND WHEN TO STAY QUIET
Sofia Ayalde 22/05/12
5 Situations when you should talk:
- When what I say adds anything to the meeting in which ideas are exchanged.
- If what I say is important for the person whom I'll tell it to.
- If they have authorized me to express my opinion on an issue.
- If you are in the right place and at the right time to tell it.
- When you disagree with what someone is saying and you need to defend your opinion.
5 Situations when you should not talk:This article I got it from the new paper El Pais. I think it is important for us to see and reflect when we should express our oppinion and when is better to keep the things for ourselves.
GOSSIP:
Sofia Ayalde 08/05/12
Gossip is a conversation between two or more people that talk about someone or about a group. The people gossiping say the information as if it was a fact, even if they are not sure it is true. We gossip when we speak in a negative way about another person, transmitting it to other people.
According to statistics:
Adults spend between one fifth of their conversational time gossiping, but only 5 percent of that time on negative gossip.
Gossip destroys another's reputation. The most famous excuse for gossip: "I only mentioned it because I was concerned." If being concerned excused gossip, 90% of all gossip could be justified.
Gossip is also a bad use of information. It is always bad because when you use the information properly it becomes social communication and so, it is not classified as a gossip.
Some good things about Social Communication:
Entertain each other
Exchange important information
Learn from others' mistakes
Gossip is created because:
Juan Pablo Abadia 08/05/12Gossip can be created just for being jealous
Also for triyng to take something to someone
Gossip can creat a mental or physical problem like dont eat in a week, depression, stress etc.
People can hurt some one because gossip is something fake.
WHY IS GOSSIP CREATED?
Sofia Ayalde 08/05/12
Let's say you've just heard a REALLY juicy rumor about someone you know. It may not be true, but its too good to keep to yourself. Your first instinct is to go and tell it to all your friends. We've all had that kind of urge. But why? Here are some possible reasons:
To feel superiorWhen people are feeling bad about themselves, they sometimes think they'll feel better if there were someone worse off than they are.
To feel like part of the groupIf everybody else is gossiping or spreading rumors, you might feel you have to do the same thing in order to fit in.
For attentionWhen you know a secret that nobody knows, or are the first person in your group to hear a rumor, it can make you the center of attention.
For control or powerCertain people always want to be in control and at the top of the ladder. When people want to be at the top of the popularity scale, one way they do this is by reducing the "status" of another person. Spreading rumors and gossip is one of the main ways people do this, especially among girls.
Out of jealousy or a need for revengeIf you're jealous of someone's looks, popularity, or money, you might gossip about that person . If you feel that someone's done something bad to you, or deserves to be hurt, making up a rumor might satisfy your sense of justice.
Out of boredomDid you know that in many studies, this was the #1 reason why young people say they spread rumors? Sometimes, a place where everyone is happy and enjoying must be boring sometimes. Spreading rummors might shake things up a bit, or get two people to start a fight, and that would make life a little more exciting. All those TV shows full of celebrity gossip are proof that rumors are a popular form of entertainment.
This are some opinions of some girls of why people gossip:
"I think people spread rumors and gossip to hurt that person's feelings because they're insecure, like bullies.""I bet people start rumors to hurt people or because they think the truth is too boring.""There are so many reasons! They may misunderstand a situation, want revenge, or just want to be a part of school life.""I think that people spread rumors and gossip because they are either bored, mad at that person, trying to stir up some activity, or to get attention."
Why do people like gossip ?
Nicolas Carvajal 09/05/12Even if you don't recognize it, everyone has talked about someone else behind their back. Gossip isn’t productive, it doesn’t help your relationships, and most people agree that it is impolite. So, why participate in gossip? Well, there are a lot of reasons why people gossip. They may not justify it, but they can at least offer us some idea into why it’s so common.
Although the word “gossip” carries a negative connotation, the truth is that there are good and bad reasons to gossip
How to Deal With the Negative Effects of Gossip?
Juan Pablo Abadia 08/05/12
When it concerns celebrities, it is often viewed as entertainment, simply a part of show business that is accessible to everyone, but how would you feel if YOU were the subject of gossip? People who know you probably have gossiped about you in the past and it is likely you have gossiped too.
The negative effects of gossip are pretty well known. We all know it can damage reputations and cause a lot of hurt, but it doesn't stop us from doing it. This is partly because gossiping is so easy to do and offers instant conflicts. It relieves anger; they cannot express it in any other way about the person they are gossiping about.
So how do we deal with gossip in general?
Well, firstly you need to be prepared to not participate in gossip in any shape or form. This means not being the first person to introduce a new gossip topic and it also means not adding fuel to the fire by joining in on any gossip you hear. This can be hard as we are surrounded by lots of gossip, but take one day at a time and soon it will become easier.
If for some reason you cannot detach yourself from a gossiper at that exact moment, make a point of trying to defend the person they are gossiping about by throwing in a question or comment that turns the gossip on its head. Gossipers need supportive listeners and are unlikely to continue if their gossip and point of view is being challenged.
